The Power of Being Intentional
One of the most impactful changes I have made in my life, especially as it relates to my overall wellness, is to become more intentional with my choices.
How many times have we just eaten something because it was there? Or had more drinks than we wanted because it was what everyone else was doing? Or wasted hours watching Netflix when we had other things that we wanted to accomplish?
Being intentional doesn’t necessarily mean making different choices, but becoming aware of your choices and the consequences of those choices. It is about being more present and making decisions that bring us closer to the life that we want to live.
A current example from my own life is in regards to alcohol. As we are all well aware, drinking is not a healthy habit and alcohol can wreak havoc on your body. For me, it especially messes with my sleep and it has become a regular occurrence that I will get less than five hours of sleep whenever I drink alcohol, which is obviously not ideal. But I also like to be social and go out with my friends, so I have tried to become more intentional about my alcohol choices. It is a pretty simple process of being aware of what I have to do the next day, the social situation I am in, and whether or not I actually feel like a drink, and making a decision from that intentional place of awareness instead of just mindlessly drinking because it is what everyone does.
This applies to just about anything - food, money, alcohol, work, time, relationships, etc. It requires you to slow down, be present, and be conscious of your overall goals and values. I think you will be surprised by the big difference that just bringing awareness to your decisions makes. It will allow you to take control over your life and your days and ensure that your choices are leading you towards where you want to be.
Think about your life and any areas where you are operating on autopilot. Can you bring more awareness to those decisions? Can you become more intentional about those choices?
