A Summer Appreciation Post

I love summer. And being back on the east coast has given me new appreciation for just how much I enjoy this season. My apologies if you are reading this from the cool and foggy California Central Coast...

While it seems like summer may never end, especially during the heat and humidity of August, it goes by quicker than you think and then it is on to crisp fall days and changing leaves. In order to slow down and appreciate this season, below are my favorite things about the summer season. What is your favorite thing about summer?

Hot summer nights. This is one of the best things about summer. There is nothing better than being out and about after the sun goes down on a warm summer night when you don’t even need a jacket.

Watermelon. My absolute favorite fruit that deserves its own post. I could eat a watermelon a day, and of course all the health benefits from this delicious and refreshing fruit are just an added bonus.

The ocean. I will always associate the summer with being near the (Atlantic) ocean. Hearing the waves crashing, walking along the beach, and diving into the salty water when the sun gets too hot are all summer staples.

Fresh fruits and vegetables. So many amazing fruits and vegetables are in season during the summer. Go to a farmer’s market and pick out your favorites. Personally, I usually go for the berries, tomatoes, and cucumbers.

Shorts. Summer is the time to whip out all those fun hot weather clothes - shorts, dresses, tank tops, and everything else that has been patiently waiting in your closet all winter.

Taking walks everywhere. Between the long days of sunlight and nice weather, walking everywhere is my favorite summer activity. I like to try to soak up the sun and be outside as much as possible - my step count during the summer skyrockets!

Summer thunderstorms. This might be more of a personal favorite, but I love a good summer thunderstorm. They cool everything off and it is so fun to watch the rain and lightning roll in from under the comfort of a blanket inside.

Long days. Is there anything better than the 9pm sunsets during the summer? Enough said.

Real ice cream. It wouldn’t be summer without a cold, summer treat and to me, there is nothing that is more summer than a delicious New England ice cream cone. Real strawberry flavor please.

The sun. Summer equals sun. And while too much sun is never a good idea, getting some sun is actually great for your overall health. The sun can give us energy, helps to regulate our circadian rhythms, and promotes relaxation and good mental health.
