Shine On
It was my birthday over the weekend and I had a post all ready to go about embracing getting older, but I am saving it for next week after being moved by reading about two tragic deaths that occurred over the weekend.
Grayson Murray, a professional golfer died by suicide at the age of 30. Bill Walton, the legendary UCLA Bruin, NBA player, and colorful broadcaster passed away from cancer at 71.
Grayson Murray bravely shared his story and spoke openly about his struggles with alcoholism and mental health. After his death, there was a prevailing sentiment that we never truly know what someone is going through and we should all aspire to treat one another with kindness and compassion.
Bill Walton was someone who did just that. Reading the stories that people were sharing about him, it was hard not to smile and think that this was someone who made the absolute most out of his life, while also going out of his way to treat the people he interacted with, from random fans to his close friends, with respect, kindness, and love.
It is hard to know what to do when tragedy occurs. The sentiment and words are there, but inevitably, we get busy with our lives, our own problems. We don’t know exactly what to do or the right thing to say. What will actually make a difference.
I was struck by something that Harry Higgs, a professional golfer, said after winning a tournament the day after Murray’s death. He challenged everyone to say something nice to someone they know. And to say something nice to someone they don’t know. Every day.
It is simple and actionable. Spreading more kindness and love in the world is not a small thing, and as Bill Walton showed, makes a big difference, both to you and others. So I will challenge you (as well as myself) to do the same. Say or do something kind for someone you know, and someone you don’t. Let’s all try to make it a daily habit and spread some goodwill.
I will leave you with these words from Bill Walton - Shine On, Carry On.
