How to stay centered throughout the holidays
The holidays are here! While this may be one of your favorite and most festive times of the year, it can also be one of the more stressful times of the year. Routines get thrown off, there is always some social obligation to attend, sugar and alcohol are everywhere, and of course all that extended time with family can come with its own set of stressors.
Below are some tips to help you navigate the holiday season so you can make it to January 1 feeling more grounded, healthy, and relaxed.
Don’t let all your routines go. While your days may be busier than usual, try not to let every routine you have go by the wayside. Stick with your regular healthy routines as best as you can. Also, consider shortening them instead of letting them go altogether - meditate for 5 minutes instead of 10, workout for 20 minutes instead of an hour. Whatever it may be, try to stick with those habits that make you feel good instead of stopping them all.
Pick one non-negotiable. Pick one habit that you will stick to throughout the holidays no matter what. Mine are meditation and exercise and I will do everything possible to get those in. Decide what your non-negotiable is and do it every day.
Schedule in some downtime. It can be tempting to fill up every day with holiday activities, but don’t be afraid to also schedule in some downtime or to take a night to yourself to relax and destress.
Get your steps in. Taking a walk, especially outside, is one of the best things that you can do to lower stress, decrease anger, and boost your mood. Make it a point to get outside and take a walk anytime you need a reset or find the stress of the season to be overwhelming.
Become more intentional. Throughout the holiday season, focus on becoming more intentional and finding balance. Before you agree to an event or obligation, think about if you want to attend and only attend if you actually want to be there. Before you indulge in certain foods or drinks, take a moment to think about if you really want it. Bringing more intentionality and mindfulness to the entire season can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
Give to others. A great way to reduce stress and take the focus off yourself is to do something for someone else. Whether it is donating your time, talent, or treasure, there are so many worthy organizations that are doing great things for the community and can also make you feel happier and more satisfied while giving back.
Don’t be afraid to say no. It can feel like there is a lot of outside pressure this time of year - pressure to attend events, eat certain foods, hang out with certain people, but your well-being and sanity is the most important thing. I promise that no one cares about your choices as much as you think. Do not be afraid to say no or prioritize yourself and your goals throughout the season.
Focus on the bigger picture. Instead of getting lost in all the commitments and to-do lists of the holiday season, think about the bigger picture and focus on the things that you enjoy about the season. Focus on all that you are grateful for and the opportunity to celebrate with friends and family.
Enjoy! Have fun throughout the holidays and enjoy yourself! If you want some more tips focused more on healthy holiday choices, check out this blog from last year.
